A DOG had to be rescued after becoming wedged between two rocks at a west Cornwall beach.

The unlucky pooch, named Hudson, was chasing a ball when he became stuck at Long Rock on Sunday afternoon.

Owner Linda Ward, 65, struggled in vain with the help of two passers-by to move the large boulder and rescue her hapless pet, but when it wouldn't budge, and with a rising tide, Cornwall Fire Service and the Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team were called in.

"He dived down after the ball in to the rock but once he got in he couldn't get out," said Mrs Ward from Relubbus.

The teams used a winch to move the rock and rescue the six-and-a-half-year-old springer spaniel.

"We had to winch quite a sizeable rock to release him," said Tim Stevens, station officer with the local rescue team. "And we found his ball as well."

Hudson is unscathed after his exploits but Mrs Ward said he hadn't learnt from a previous rock rescue.

"A few months back he did the same thing but the rock he got stuck under was not so big," she said.

The rescue team and Penzance fire crew were called to the scene at 3.40pm and safely reunited dog and owner within half an hour and without getting wet in a rising tide.
