ROADS have been closed, flood warnings are in place for rivers around Cornwall and the Tamar Bridge was closed to high-sided vehicles as strong winds batter Devon and Cornwall.

Storm force winds have hit the region overnight leaving some roads covered in debris.

The A393 in Lanner at the Pennance Lane junction, the A3078 westbound in Tregony between the B3287 Tregony Hill junction and the A390 Denas Water junction and the A393 in Ponsanooth at the Speech Lane junction were closed this morning in both directions because of fallen trees. They have since been cleared

One lane of the Tamar Bridge was closed because of the wind and although now re-opened, traffic is heavy in both directions.

Traffic was waiting for up to 45 minutes to cross at the Torpoint Ferry.

A spokesperson for the Met Office weather agency said: "High winds will be accompany heavy rain which could cause "localised flooding".

It issued a severe weather warning for the whole of the country from 3am to 6pm on Tuesday.

"There is a weather system developing over the Atlantic which is going to track across the northern half of the British Isles," forecaster George Goodfellow said yesterday.

"It is looking like bringing some very strong winds. There is a chance of severe gale force winds with gusts of 45-55mph quite widely.

"The worst affected areas could see gusts of 60-70mph for a time. On top of that it will be very wet for a time as well.

"We had a few of these storms coming in from the Atlantic during December followed by relatively quiet days and this looks like a continuation of that."

The weather warning, the lowest of three on the Met Office system, urges people to "be aware" with travel disruption likely.

Other parts of the UK are being hit by winds of up to 90mph which have closed roads and railway lines.
