Tresco's famous sub-tropical gardens at risk from storms
The curator of Tresco’s famous Abbey Gardens fears that they may be at risk from further storms.
The sub-tropical gardens hold 20,000 species which have come from 80 different countries around the world but are now in serious danger as sand dunes along a 400 to 500-yard stretch of beach protecting them are washed away.
Mike Nelhams said: “The south end of the island has taken a real hit and the beach is being taken away in bite-sized chunks.
“The fact that this is happening so often and so quickly is very concerning. We have lost five or six metres of beach in the last two or three months alone which is a lot.”
