THE COUNTY Indoor Rowing Championships were held at Newquay Tretherras School on Friday.

It was one of the first events in the 2012 Cornwall School Games and organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnerships. There were more than 130 students from across the county, competing in Year 7 to Year 13 group heats.

The Tretherras rowing team competed in several heats and included Shannon Beckerleg, rowing against teammates, who finished first and won a gold medal.

Head of PE, Craig Richards, said: "It is a great opportunity for students to get a taste of a big competition while representing their school.

"It is a real motivator for them."

Director of sport Richard Higginson said: "It is fantastic that the Cornwall Sports Partnerships has allowed us to host such an event and be part of the Cornwall School Games."
