Tributes to former Newquay councillor Harry Heywood
TRIBUTES have been paid to a long-standing Newquay Cornwall councillor, family man and comic, who will forever be remembered as "the original Mr Cool".
Harry Heywood, a former mayor of Restormel, died peacefully in hospital on Wednesday, October 23, at the age of 83, following a short illness.
He had suffered a stroke on October 1 and was undergoing treatment at the Lanyon Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Camborne Redruth Community Hospital.
A grandfather of three and great grandfather of two, Harry leaves behind wife, Pam, daughters Claire, 56, and Lynne, 53, and son Neale, 52, guitarist with band Fleetwood Mac.
Pam said her husband had dedicated his life to helping people, from youngsters at youth clubs in Essex, where they first met, to the people of Newquay once they moved to the resort in 1988.
He was handed his "Mr Cool" moniker by a club owner in Southend, where he was a compere and stand-up comedian, and it perfectly summed up his unflappable nature, she said.
"Whatever you threw at him, he could cope with it and I can't imagine any type of person who wouldn't get on with Harry," Pam said.
"I would like him to be remembered as a fair man who worked hard for the people. He was always helping people; it's what he did best."
Daughter Claire added: "If someone came to him with a problem, he wouldn't let it go until he was satisfied."
Harry and Pam met in 1952, at the ages of 21 and 16, while rehearsing for a pantomime at Ekco electronics and plastics company in Southend where both had begun working.
They were married in 1956 and stayed in the Southend area until 1988, when arthritis and surgery on his back meant Harry had to give up work and the couple moved to Newquay.
He became a Restormel borough councillor in 1998, as well as a Newquay town councillor, before suffering a potentially fatal abdominal aortic aneurysm in 2000.
"We nearly lost him," said Pam. "He said to me afterwards that he had to come back as he had lots more to do."
A keen gardener and Manchester United fan, Harry became a Cornwall county councillor in 2001 and was mayor of Restormel between 2003 and 2004. He was elected as a Cornwall councillor in 2009, and represented Treviglas until May this year.
Harry's funeral will take place from 2pm on Monday, November 4, at St Michael's Church in Newquay, followed by committal at Penmount Crematorium, Truro, and later gathering at the Hotel Bristol, in Newquay.
