FRIENDS have named the motorcyclist who died in a collision at Penzance as a grandfather who lives at Porthtowan.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident involving an Audi saloon and father of three Tony Underwood's Suzuki motorbike at about 3.40pm on Saturday outside the Cliff Hotel at Chyandour Cliff.

The Audi driver, a local woman in her thirties, was not injured but Mr Underwood, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police had still not named the motorcyclist as the West Briton went to press but by Sunday night friends were posting fond messages to Mr Underwood's Facebook page.

The former Cape Cornwall School pupil is believed to have been living in Porthtowan after recently returning from living in Spain. His wife Rebecca Underwood, known as Becks, changed his Facebook picture on Sunday night to an image of the two of them with the message: "The night I met the man of my dreams."

He leaves Becks, their two children, son Ethan and daughter Ocean, and Jess, his daughter from a previous relationship. Mr Underwood is said to have worked in property renovation and car sales before moving to Spain.

An impromptu tribute has sprung up near the spot where he died. A lamp-post at the bottom of Lannoweth Road is adorned with flowers and messages from family and friends, including a touching picture by daughter Ocean showing an angel, and a message from his widow.

It reads: "On Saturday 16th February I lost my best friend and soul mate, the love of my life, Tony Underwood.

"Words cannot describe how my family and I are feeling inside and I cannot imagine life without him."

The main road into Penzance was closed for more than six hours for investigations.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the motorcycle travelling along Chyandour Cliff towards Eastern Green prior to the incident. Call the collisions unit on 101, quoting log 555 of February 16.
