YOUNG TIGERS RAMPANT:

For the first time in the club's history, St Agnes Rugby Club entered a team in the Cornwall U12 County Festival and came away with the Plate Trophy – normally a preserve of the bigger, long-established clubs.

The festival was hosted by Launceston, with 16 clubs taking part from Saltash to Penzance.

St Agnes minis, first set up with a group of only 10 children by former county star Stewart Whitworth in 2004, now boast five teams from U7s tag rugby to U12s.

St Agnes were drawn in Pool 3 with hosts Launceston, Penzance and one of the pre-tournament favourites Truro.

It started well for St Agnes against Launceston with the Tigers beating a bigger side by two tries to one.

This was followed by a bruising encounter against a big Penzance side with St Agnes taking the lead twice but having to settle for a draw at two tries each.

After Penzance beat Launceston in their last match, the pool was left in the balance which meant St Agnes required a result against Truro.

With some great running rugby from the backs the Tigers threatened to cross the Truro line but were stopped short by some last ditched tackling.

The second half was a tight affair with Truro finishing the stronger but with some tenacious tackling, defence and a couple of close calls the Tigers held firm to secure the draw and a well deserved runners up spot in Pool 3 and progressed to the Plate semi-final.

The semi-final started well for St Agnes, but Saltash then cut through their defence to score and go a try up.

St Agnes responded well with some free flowing rugby resulting in a fantastic try in the corner from their wing Annouska.

In the second half St Agnes started well with an early try and they ran in a third from the influential Dan Hubble to progress to the final with a three tries to one win.

The final saw them up against the Wadebridge Camels and in a one-sided second half they scored three unanswered tries.

With no let up in the second half and blistering pace from Annouska they scored a fourth try but with the trophy in sight and a hard day's work behind them, they took their foot off the pedal and Wadebridge scored a consolation try with the last play of the game reducing the final score to four tries to one.

Coach Tim Baker said: "I am so proud of the team. We are a small club with a family ethic, everyone played with true spirit, determination and courage against at times players much bigger than themselves and I am in no doubt we saw a few future professional and county players today.

The winning team, captained by George Parry, included Tom Savage, Oli Baker, Patrick Flanagan, Jared Mortimore, Robert Grigg, Louis Downing, Dan Hubble, Seb Firth, Seb Gregovich and Annouska Gregovich, George Spurrier and Conall Cromie.

The club is always keen to welcome new players. Anyone interested should look at www.aggietigers.com

The team would like to thank Sevenmilestone Garage, St Agnes, for their support and sponsorship throughout the year.

TEAMS PROGRESS:

Both Truro sides in the U12s Alliance league are through to this year's Kernow Youth League cup final.

League leaders, Truro City Tigers beat a valiant Lanner Lions 7-0 to claim the first cup final place with goals from Joe Unwin, Kyle Marks, Curtis Paye and Dario Pisano.

Meanwhile, Truro City Lions beat Culdrose 4-2.

The Culdrose attack was quick and proved tough opponents for the Lions' defence but Jono Russell was again outstanding and earned his player of the match award.

Culdrose were awarded a penalty but the Lions were determined to prove their point and with goals again from Brodie Mitchell,

James Trew, Ben Hood and Harry Clarke, ran out winners. It's certainly an achievement for the Lions who gained promotion to the Alliance league this season.

Falmouth U8s 0, Truro City Tigers U8s 6:

Truro continued their run of terrific form with an outstanding performance against a quality Falmouth side.

Right from the kick-off an impressive display of passing forced Falmouth onto the back foot. Some determined last gasp defending by the home side kept Truro out before a superb individual goal by Lewis Tonkin broke the deadlock. Cody Stanbury made it 2-0 before half-time and added his second goal shortly after the break.

Oliver Cleghorn and Ben Glanville in defence limited the home side's chances, allowing goalkeeper Alex Wilson to display his talent outfield for the second half. A further two goals by captain Callum Edgecombe and one from Alexander Bray took the final score to 6-0.

Leedstown U8s 0, Truro City Tigers Under-8s 8:

A fine team performance resulted in another comprehensive win for Truro.

Within minutes of the kick off some fine play up the left wing was finished off by Logan Taylor with a well taken goal. Truro continued to pile on the pressure which resulted in Cody Stanbury slotting home the second midway through the half.

A solid display of defending by Oliver Cleghorn, Josh Rowe and captain Ben Glanville gave the plucky Leedstown side few chances before Josh Hodge and Callum Edgecombe made it 4-0 before half-time. An excellent individual goal by eventual man of the match Alexander Bray opened the scoring in the second half before Lewis Tonkin was rewarded for another outstanding performance with a calmly taken goal. Cody Stanbury netted two further goals to complete his hat-trick and take the final score to 8-0.

MARTIN TAKES HONOURS:

Howard Martin won the Seniors' March Stableford at Killiow scoring 36 points, narrowly beating John Bacon, also with 36 points, on countback. Bernard Morris was third with 35.

Junior member, Pete Sinclair, who won the Junior March Medal, rounded off a very successful week by winning Division 1 of the Men's March Stableford on Saturday.

He scored 40 points just ahead of second-placed Martin Roberts who had 39 points. Ben Chapman took the third spot with 38.

Division 2 was won by Brian Best with a brilliant score of 46 points. Paul Wilton came second with 43 and Tony Zee third with 42.

PERRANPORTH ROUND-UP:

Saturday saw Perranporth Ladies out in pairs playing their annual Captain v Vice Captain match play competition. The atmosphere was relaxed, helped by the best weather of the year and it was very appropriate that a respectable half was declared – meaning that all the ladies were able to share the chocolates.

TRURO STABLEFORD:

Results of Truro's March Stableford on Saturday were:

Division One: 1, Matt Salmon 41pts; 2, Pete Flaherty 38; 3, Darrian Gay 38. Division 2: 1, Ron Penhaligon 41; 2, Raj Dhumale 39; 3, Gareth Jones 38

FOUR SO GOOD FOR TRURO:

Marlborough 2 , Truro 4:

Truro completed the Premier Division Two double over Marlborough with a controlled and assured victory.

The Cornish team went straight at the home from the start, with this season's top scorer, Nick Curnow scoring within five minutes after some smooth link up play with Steven Matthews.

Curnow then doubled the lead with a neat reverse flick after nippy winger Robin Kendall had beaten his marker to set him up.

The second half saw Matthews continuing to trouble the Marlborough defence, scoring with an instinctive finish. Marlborough mounted a small comeback but this was very much down to Truro taking their foot off the pedal and making some needless mistakes.

The home side scored two in quick succession as individual errors proved costly. However, Truro remained calm, again injecting some urgency and pace into their game with Curnow grabbing his third of the day, to finally kill off Marlborough's hopes and probably condemn them to relegation.

The final league game of the season takes place at Truro School on Saturday with Truro entertaining Swansea at 1.30pm.

Morgarows 3, Truro Ladies 0:

This was one of those games when a team walks off the pitch unable to understand how they could have lost, but lose they did as Morgarrows made the most of their chances while Truro wasted theirs.

For most of the first half Truro dominated, Kelly Jefferies running the midfield pivot well, allowing Laura Harper and Natalie Oliver freedom to create things for the forwards. Morgarrows had three chances in and around the Truro area and managed to convert them all into goals despite Jade Taylor's best efforts in goal.

At half-time Truro regrouped and went into the second half a different team, with Natalie Olive taking charge of the Truro defence with Miranda Burton.

Susan Brown, making her first appearance for several months, had a stormer of a game and fed some great balls to the Truro forwards.

This was obviously not going to be Truro's day, as Morgarrows defended well and even when Truro thought they had scored through Chloe Sutcliffe, the goal was disallowed.

Truro's loss several weeks ago to Plymouth Uni, has been overturned and Truro awarded a 5-0 walkover after Uni were found to have played an ineligible player, proving a small crumb of comfort.

Truro: Jade Taylor (GK), Stacie Coote (capt), Kelly Jefferies, Natalie Oliver, Miranda Burton, Laura Harper, Alexa Blake, Anna Barrington, Chloe Sutcliffe, Michelle Hares, Verity Parke, Susan Brown, Paula Cockle, Vicky Cook

TRURO EASE TO WIN:

Truro Junior Hockey Club took an U16 mixed team to Penzance Hockey Club's astro-turf for their third cup game this season.

Both Penzance and Truro put out strong teams, with two rolling subs, but unbeaten Truro soon began to dominate the game and by half-time led 5-0.

It was hot so Lewis managed to keep the subs rolling and he gave a motivating half-time speech. Truro kept up the great play and the match ended 10- 0. Well played to all the players, especially George, Miranda and Vicky for holding a strong defence.

HONOURS EVEN:

Camborne SoM 24 St Agnes 24

It was honours even in this Cornwall League game.

St Agnes opened the scoring, capping good early pressure with a well-deserved try from hooker Ben Sowden, crashing over from a ruck five metres from the home side's try line. Fly-half Jamie Watkins converted. St Agnes increased their lead on 25 minutes after some great forward play was finished off well by the backs, centre Matthew Sergeant going over after 35 minutes.

Camborne, though, stormed back as St Agnes took their foot off the pedal, scoring 24 unanswered points before the break,

But as referee Trevor Stribley was about to blow, St Agnes fly-half Jamie Watkins waltzed over after some great individual work to reduce the deficit to 24-19 at the interval.

The second half was end-to-end.

Full back James Watson made a superb try-saving tackle to prevent Camborne from increasing their lead.

With 15 minutes to go St Agnes Number 8 Chris Watkins bulldozed over for an unconverted try to draw the sides level and the points were shared.

DAVEY LEADS RECOVERY

Morwenstow 3, Probus 3:

Probus collected only their second point from the last five East Cornwall Premier League premier division matches but will be heartened by the spirit that saw them battle back from a 3-1 deficit.

Morwenstow had the better of the first half and took the lead through a Djamel Bousahla volley but Probus made a brighter start to the second period and equalised with a 30-yard effort by Paul Cox.

That produced a lively response by the home side and they eased into a 3-1 lead with goals from Ashley Thomas and Bousahla.

Man of the match Pete Davey led the Probus recovery with some sound defensive work while pushing forward to score a couple of goals.

His first was a close range tap in and the equaliser followed work by player-manager Chris Davey. Morwenstow claimed the final goal eight minutes into stoppage time.
