POUNDLAND has been revealed as the new occupier of the former Woolworth's store in Truro.

Due to open on June 25, the discount retailer has taken a temporary lease on the property until January, with the promise of 27 jobs.

According to Scott Burridge Commercial, which is marketing the landmark city-centre premises, the building then looks set to become three separate shops. Two units facing Boscawen Street will measure 2,000 and 7,000 sq ft, and one unit facing onto Lemon Quay will measure 4,000 sq ft.

Mike Scott of Scott Burridge Commercial said: "The complete store is larger than Poundland are looking for, but they have expressed long-term interest in one of the units in the new premises.

"The temporary premises are a great opportunity for them to test the market in Truro."

Established in 1990, Poundland, where every item costs £1, has grown to become the UK's and Europe's largest single price retailer and has more than 200 stores nationwide.

Poundland's trading director David Coxon said: "We're absolutely thrilled to be opening a store in Truro, creating jobs and great shopping opportunities.

"I'm sure the Cornish savvy shoppers will be delighted by the amazing value that Poundland offers."

To mark Poundland's arrival in the city a television celebrity will officially welcome shoppers to a family fun day on Saturday, June 27.

During the day the store will also raise money for its charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support.

“Hehe Peachy, you brightened up my day!

Used to shop in one when I visited Cheltenham boys, admittedly there was some tat but some good stuff if you looked around a bit.

If it's good enough for the ladies of Cheltenham College then I suspect it's good enough for Truro!

Best of luck to them, hope it is a success, has to be better than empty premises.

    Stop being so snotty lads!”
