Truro driver Rebecca Steadman pulled out in front of cycling couple
A DRIVER who pulled out of a junction in front of two cyclists, causing one to fall and injure himself, told Truro magistrates she thought she was driving safely.
Rebecca Steadman, aged 27 and of Falmouth Road, Truro, pleaded not guilty to driving without due care and attention on April 18 but was convicted and fined £130 with £220 costs and surcharge and given six points on her licence.
The court heard the cyclists, a married couple, had been confronted by the car turning out of the junction of Charles Street and Lemon Street in Truro in front of them.
The wife had managed to steer round the car, but her husband was left with no alternative but to brake hard and fell off his bike into the road.

An independent witness said he saw the male cyclist having to brake hard because of the car. If he had not done so he might have gone into the side of the vehicle.
Steadman told the magistrates she considered she had sufficient time to pull out in front of the cyclists.
Seconds after turning she heard a banging on her car and was being shouted at by the cyclist, after which his bike toppled on to the road.
She denied she had misjudged coming out of the turning, she admitted she had been using her mobile phone, on speaker, immediately before pulling out.
When she stopped her car in Lemon Street following the accident she picked up her phone, said: "I'll call you back," and threw the phone on to the passenger seat.
She claimed the male cyclist had fallen off his bike after she got out of her vehicle, and had thrown the bike in anger.
