Supporters of plans for two of the tallest wind turbines in Devon are "likely" to appeal against the refusal of planning permission.

Totnes Renewable Energy Society wants to challenge South Hams District Council's decision to reject the 100m (325ft) high turbines at Luscombe Cross outside Totnes.

Planners said the twin turbines would cause "sustained and unacceptable harm" to the landscape character.

Hundreds of people bought shares in the £4m scheme designed to power 2,500 households. Ian Bright, manager director of TRESOC who submitted the application with wind energy firm Infinergy, said: "We would like this application to go to an appeal. Without it we will not hit our 15% energy target."

Jane Brady, TRESOC marketing director, said: "An appeal is likely, but we will need to consider all our options with Infinergy."

Opponent Ginny Davidson, said the verdict showed "common sense" had triumphed. She said: "Any appeal would be against the public interest and the clear wishes of the real community and we are fully committed to strenuously defending the planning committee decision."
