THE UK's first artificial surf wave pool will be built on Newquay's doorstep after planners gave the £25 million project the green light.

The Retallack Surfside resort will be built at Spirit of the West Raceway, Winnards Perch, near St Columb after Restormel Borough Council approved the plans on Thursday night.

The 100-acre site will now be transformed, with the 100 metre pool, 124 holiday cottages and 100 grass-roofed 'surf pods' built as well as a function room, restaurant, cafe and surf retail store.

Marcus Cryer, from the Queenswood Group – the company behind the plans – said he was overjoyed with the decision. We are absolutely delighted the application has been passed; it's great news," he said.

"The hard work starts now, really. We are getting a detailed design together and then we will be able to give out details on timelines and targets for the work. It's a case of watch this space."

The surf wave pool would generate waves from one foot to nine feet, allowing both beginners and experts to ride waves in a safe environment. The surf pool would be exclusively for resort guests but it is planned to allow local people access to it, possibly through a membership scheme.

Restormel Borough Council added several conditions to the section 106 agreement, as part of their approval of the plans.

Councillors decided that once 62 lodges and 50 surf pods had been built, construction work on the surf pool, generator and artificial beach would have to begin. In their report, Restormel planning officers said the resort would have a positive economic impact on the area.

The report stated: "This significant tourism development, including surf wave generator facility, is likely to attract a large number of visitors to the area and therefore the development is likely to have a positive impact on the local economy."

And Deran Hancock, mayor of St Columb, gave the project his backing – claiming it was something the surrounding villages could "grasp hold of".

He said: "This is a breath of fresh air for St Columb Major. Every business in St Columb Major would benefit from this.

"Twelve or 14 years ago this land was nothing more than quagmire, and we have been desperate for something like this to happen on it."

The Retallack Surfside resort is expected to create at least 50 full-time and a number of part-time jobs.

“Like so many comments before, why would any one build this near Newquay. It's like building an indoor snow dome next to a ski resort!!!!! I thought a had seen and heard so many stupid things in my life that nothing could leave me speechless, then I read this. All I can say is this must be a hoax. There is a huge surf community in Sussex and else where further east of Cornwall where we have little quality day that bring good surf but we put the time and effort in so that when we get to see good waves we enjoy them to the full. It would make more sense to build one in the South East. Please tell me this is a joke.”

“I love surfing, but i live in Essex and as you probaly know there are no waves here. What is the point of putting a wave machine in Newquay when it's surrounded by hundreds of beaches near by. Cant it be more central of England where there are no surfing beaches. Surfers living in Cornwall wont bother using artificial waves when there are proper waves on the edge of their doorsteps. why would they change something they have been doing for years for something that is not necessarily better. People living in cornwall more or less know or have tried surfing, why not put it more central where you can encourage children that have not tried surfing to surf. Therfore if likeing it will try the real waves in the beaches like Newquay.”

“As a holiday maker myself i am speechless about what is going to happen at my beloved westworld. As a racing family we always drove down to Cornwall after school so that my brother could race. We had so much fun. I agree with the majority that if the land is so big why not have both?? whats the problem?

Do they only think that racing is a southern based thing? or do the Scottish,Irish, Welsh and Northern based drivers not travel anymore??

At least we'll have one last meeting in the summer.

RIP to a great british sport that is slowly dying before our eyes because it isn't PC”

“Westworld Raceway plus the Spirit of the West site has been a second home to me for the past 10 or more years and to see it go will be like watching an old friend die.The raceway brings thrills as well as spills all year round and is the best racing in Cornwall, why oh why demolish it for an artificial beach that hardly anyone is going to use and even less people want.C'ant you see this is a terrible decision, wake up and smell reality Queenswood Group!”

“Why build one on Westworld, the people who want to use the surf machine will have to stay newquay anyway as those log cabions are being sold !!! anyone in their right mind with a beach on their doorstep who is on holiday would just go to the beach insted of paying rediculous amounts for a warmer pool???? And so mucxh for it bringing surfers into it, i surf and so do many of my mates and we can tell you that money is an issue, certainly at these times, so why would we want the 'perfect wave' when the UK and Cornwall have Fistral Beach,, COME ON !!!”

“This is a 100 acere site so why not have both there? The track is situated in a hole which surpresses the sound and the spectaters are on the banking looking down on the raceing. It's the perfect setup. The pits and parking don't get muddy as the ground is sandy. This is a great track to race on and spectate.I have had some good times here and you can't repreduce it anywhere else. The surf pool may not be busy all the time. The site will still be subject to our british climet. So as it's a 100 acre site why not have both lots of incombe?

“Firstly, i think that it is sad that our local counsils main priority is to entertain and attract holiday makers rather than them keeping local peoples interests at heart. Our family have raced at Westworld Raceway for over ten years and i think that it is a discrase that the likes of our thoughts and feelings keep falling upon deaf ears, for example all of the radio shows that i have heard have failed to mention that the track even exists. there are around 100 race cars that attend the track regurlaly, the majority of which will now become obsolete as there is only one other tarmac track in cornwall and alot of our cars will not have been built to abide by their rules and specifications. This will mean alot of our money will have been wasted.”

“Frankly, I couldn't care less about either the banger track or the surf lake thing.

For the prosperity of Cornwall however, I'd go with the surf pool. How many holidaymakers head for the site to watch banger racing (what once a fortnight)? The surf pool will run 7 days a week in the warmer months and (given that people surf year-round) could also be used most of the year. This will bring a steady flow of surfers and might even become a venue for competitions etc (you never know). With the surfers comes money, money that's needed in cornwall; with the money will come jobs.

Anyone that knows anything about surfing will understand that the most frustrating thing about surfing in Cornwall is the lack of consistency. I know people who take their gear all over the world to guarantee a good summer wave. Go to Cornwall for a 'surfing' holiday in the summer and you're taking a chance on getting a decent wave. A surf pool takes this risk away (as long as the waves are of good quality and the equipment is reliable). Anyway it might make some of the local breaks less crowded.

My final words on the matter are: the people that own the track are the ones developing the pool; so it's up to them what they do with their cash. The council have approved it too, so there can't have been any 'rewasonable' objections to it.”

“frist of all why? there's so much land a round cornwall why do they have to pick the best banger in cornwall to build this poxey reef! like every one else has said there a exlent beach 15 miles down the road! this track is where mine and my brothers banger racing started and many other peoples why take it away from us. BUILD THE SURF CENTRE SOME WHERE ELSE!”
