UPDATE: Padstow speedboat incident - mother has leg amputated
A mother seriously hurt in a speedboat crash that killed her husband and daughter has had her leg amputated, the family confirmed today.
Victoria Milligan, 39, had the left limb removed below the knee following the tragedy which claimed the lives of husband Nick, 51, and Emily, eight.
The couple and their four children were flung into the water and run over by the fast-circling runaway craft off Padstow two weeks ago.
Accident investigators have confirmed a safety "kill cord" - designed to stop the boat when the driver is thrown- was not attached to whoever was at the helm.
But their report said it was "not clear" who was piloting the boat shortly before Nick and Emily were killed.
Yoga teacher Victoria, 39, and son Kit, four, of Wandsworth, south west London, are still recovering from wounds caused by the 50mph boat's propeller.
A family statement confirmed Victoria had lost her leg and daughters Amber, 12, and Olivia, ten, are out of hospital.
Victoria and Kit have been moved from a hospital in Plymouth, Devon, to a London unit and need more surgery.
The statement said: "All family members have now left Derriford Hospital.
"Amber and Olivia have been discharged while Victoria and Kit have been transferred to a London hospital.
"Victoria's left leg has been amputated below the knee. Kit is responding well to treatment but both require further surgery.
"We are grateful for the continued support of our family and friends and the good wishes we have received from the public."
An interim report into the May 4 accident has now revealed the engine could have been switched off sooner if a kill cord had been used.
It is supposed to be attached to the skipper's leg so it yanks out the ignition key and cuts the throttle if the helmsman is thrown from the craft.
The safety body have not said who was driving the boat but confirmed the vessel's kill cord was not attached to whoever was at the helm.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said at this stage it was "not clear" how the family came to be thrown off their rigid hulled inflatable boat.
