Unlucky seven for spirited Amateurs
& DEVON LEAGUE
Falmouth 18, Pirates Amateurs 13
THE Pirates Amateurs suffered a seventh successive defeat as the visitors' winless start to the season continued at a blustery Recreation Ground on Saturday.
It was a game that ebbed and flowed with Falmouth exerting pressure and the Pirates times unable to get out of their own half.
However, the Amateurs defended superbly in difficult conditions to keep the home side at bay, with skipper Craig Stevens, Leigh Edwards and Ben Noyce all in outstanding form.
After the Eagles spurned numerous good chances to score, the Amateurs first excursion into Eagles' territory saw Rhys Brownfield score an unconverted try to put the visitors into the lead.
The Eagles responded immediately as Jacob Stephens touched down from a catch and drive move, and Justin Irons converted to put the Eagles briefly in front.
However, right on half-time poor defending from the home side, coupled with an excellent three-quarter move for the Amateurs by Danny Toolan and Nick Hitchens led to a splendid try in the corner finished off by Jack Nicholas, before a Brownfield penalty gave the visitors a 13-7 lead at the turnaround.
The visitors again defended superbly to counter Falmouth's forward power early in the second half, but they were unable to prevent Sam Burke crossing for a try from a rolling maul which brought Falmouth back to within a point.
And two penalties, slotted by the boot of Irons swung the match in the home side's favour as they took the lead for the first time.
The last minutes were nail-biting as the visitors mounted a late challenge and looked the more likely to score, with Noyce coming close, but the Eagles defence stood firm.
