"COWARDLY" vandals have damaged a number of cars in west Cornwall by dousing them in a corrosive substance, police have said.

Around 13 cars in Gulval and Penzance are believed to have had brake fluid poured on them. Police are investigating the offences, which all took place between 9pm and midnight on Thursday, December 20.

"This is a cowardly crime which causes great expense and distress to the victims," said a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police.

Cars parked in Helnoweth Hill, Trythogga Road, Trevarrack Row and Ridgevale Lane in Gulval were targeted with brake fluid thrown on the paintwork.

Identical offences were committed around the same time at Leskinnick Terrace, North Parade, Alexandra Place and The Promenade in Penzance.

"We suspect that the offenders are using a vehicle and possibly squirting or throwing the substance from their vehicle as all damage has been caused to the side of vehicles facing the road.

"Please forward any information regarding suspicious vehicles or persons prowling around parked vehicles to Penzance police," added the spokesman.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting crime reference AP/12/3037.

“Offences like this are the reason why police forces nationally need to adopt a zero tolerance policy. Idiots like this need to be taught what the word punishment means and not given a slap on the wrist - what else would you call community order, suspended sentence or ASBO? As long as they are aware that they will not be punished they will carry on and many will "progress" to more serious crimes.”
