Two volunteers have been commended for their hard work helping children.

Jay Kennett, 70, and from Okehampton, was recognised in the Marsh Trust Barnardo's Volunteer of the Year Awards for her work at the town's Sure Start centre.

Barnardo's spokesman Chris Parsons, said Jay has hardly missed a session in almost three years.

"Jay prepares the activities and refreshments and then spends most of the session playing with the older children or reading stories, as well as chatting to parents," he added.

A Cornish volunteer also received a regional commendation for work with vulnerable children.

Keith Dormer, a 63-year-old from Redruth, was praised for the hundreds of hours donated every year to Barnardo's services across the county. He has been a volunteer with the charity since September 2009 and works as an independent visitor, advocate and befriender.

Nick Cook of the charity's Voice4us service in Launceston, said: "He has been a fantastic support and has a knack of helping them to discover their potential, allowing them to work out their own strengths and skills. His enthusiasm and commitment proves successful where many others would have given up."

The awards were presented in advance of national Make A Difference Day which takes place on Saturday October 27.
