War vet killed in crash
A D-Day veteran died after his motorbike crashed into a sign in Redruth. Frederick Pengilly, 92, was involved in a single-vehicle accident on the A3047 outside Redruth School on September 11. A police spokesman said he appeared to lose control of his small Aprilla motorcycle, leave the road, cross the grass verge and collide with a signpost. He spoke to witnesses and the police before being taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, where he died on September 16. In a statement, his family said: "Frederick (Fred) Pengilly was a member of the Parachute Regiment during the Second World War. He parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and Operation Varsity. "He was an active member of Redruth Royal British Legion and was the Redruth parade marshal for many years. "Fred was born in Miami, Arizona, in 1920 of Cornish parents and joined the Army in 1937. His wife Lilian died in 2010 and he is survived by four sons and a daughter." Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call 101, quoting log 220 of 11/09/12.
