This is Cornwall

THE seventh Cornwall Film Festival is back with a vengeance and the 2008 programme promises something for everyone.

From romantic lovers to horror fans and from environmentalists to budding young directors there's sure to be a film, event or party to suit all tastes.

This year's festival kicks off on Thursday, November 6, with Screen Actions (see story below) and runs until Sunday, November 9, with the main festival opening its doors on Friday, November 7.

The packed programme includes some of the best up-and-coming Cornish talent as well as a top selection of international films, professional development workshops, talks and sure to be legendary parties.

The four-day event provides the opportunity to meet the UK's leading film and media industry professionals and will take place across three venues, Princess Pavilion and National Maritime Museum in Falmouth and Sandsifter Bar at Gwithian.

South West feature premieres include Blindness, directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardner) with an introduction by executive producer Simon Channing-Williams, Terence Davies' Of Time and the City, which will be introduced by Mark Kermode (BBC 2's The Culture Show) and Hush introduced by writer and director Mark Tonderai and producer Zoe Stewart.

Special screenings include Jerry Rothwell's Heavy Load: A Film About Happiness, an uplifting documentary film following a punk collective who are subject to the same combustible mix of ego, passion and ambition that fuels any band, but there's a unique twist that sets this particular pack of punk troubadours apart from the rest.

Other special features include F W Murnau's wonderful Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, a timeless classic of corruption, redemption and true love which is widely regarded as one of the most exquisitely realised of all silent films, accompanied by atmospheric live music from Cornish band Wurlitza.

The festival will also be showcasing the world premiere of Nebes Geryow A-dro Dhe'n made in the Cornish language and winner of the Govynn Kernewek Award 2007.

The festival's eagerly anticipated and much-hyped (it won't disappoint) board sports film event Board Shorts, in association with Sharps Doom Bar, returns to the Sandsifter Bar in Gwithian on Saturday, November 8.

The must-see screenings will be followed by what promises to be a lively party with music from Mark Kermode's skiffle band The Dodge Brothers and local DJs Sir Vinyl of the Fattest throwing some top tunes out to the dancefloor.
