Werrington pair hold firm as champions retain the Premier League title
In the end it may have been something of a damp squib for the big crowd, but that won’t have worried Werrington’s cricketers in the least as they comfortably retained the Cornwall Premier League title with a draw at rivals Falmouth.
It was a game Falmouth had to win to overtake their opponents, but after being bowled out for 164, after being put into bat at Trescobeas, with Stefan Churcher making a classy 60, Werrington knew they had simply to avoid being bowled out and lose the game to retain the title.
After some early nervy moments, when they slipped to 37 for three, an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 110 betwen Adam Hodgson (17) and Alex Smeeth (70no) saw the visitors end on 147 for three, thus denying Falmouth their first top flight title since 1992.
Falmouth tried everything to dislodge the pair and although there were a couple of close lbw shouts and a few edges, the Werrington duo held on with the miminum of alarm as the game rather fizzled out in the evening sunshine.
