Devon and Cornwall's roads to get £15m upgrade
Motorists in Devon and Cornwall could be disrupted by 'vital' road improvements, which have been announced today by the Government.
The Highways Agency is set to deliver several road improvements in the South West costing £15 million as part of a £217 million national programme outlined by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

Works will take place on A38 Drumbridges roundabout in Newton Abbot, A38/A380 Splatford Split near Exeter, the A38 Manadon slip road in Plymouth, and M5 junction 30 slip road in Exeter.
The £5.5m works on Splatford Split will create an additional lane for traffic merging with the A38 from the A380. The £4.1m works at Drumbridges will include installing traffic signals and constructing a pedestrian and cycle bridge. Both projects will take place in 2014.

Both the £1.8m Manadon slip road work and the £0.9m M5 junction 30 work involve widening the slip roads. Traffic lights will also be improved during the M5 works.
Mr McLoughlin said: "These £217 million road improvements prove the Government's determination to accelerate growth and cut congestion.
"Keeping traffic moving is vital to securing prosperity."
Many of the improvements will be delivered in 2014, and they will all be completed by March 2015.

“accom i think you are a dreamer of beautiful dreams, the chances of dualling the A361 are about as likely as the Pope converting to another religion. All regular users of the road know that it should have been at least dualed from the outset between Bideford (first \ last part of the A39 depending which way you're coming from) through to the M5. The reason it'll never be done is simply the cost...it would take years to complete the job and with the installation of numerous junctions I can just hear the Highways Agency saying...'ouch!'
It's the incredibly poor infrastructure throughout Devon and Cornwall that is a huge factor in preventing both counties from prospering...wherever there's a good trainline and road house prices rise, standards of living improve for the majority and there are more jobs. That said we would all probably get a bit grumpier because with those things come lots more people and houses. That's why the South East is so afluent, and why house prices here are a fraction of what they are there, so many jobs are minimum wage and so on...”
