Westren ruled out for season
FORMER Cornish Pirates centre Ryan Westren has learnt this week that his season has come to a premature end after sustaining a serious knee injury playing for his current club, London Scottish.
The 25-year-old, from Madron, suffered the injury in the final minute of only his second appearance of the season for the Exiles as they went down to a heavy defeat at Nottingham a fortnight ago.
Westren was one of only a handful of London Scottish players to emerge with any credit in a 54-9 loss and collapsed during the final play of the game as he broke clear in possession and attempted to round the home full back.
It was confirmed by scan results on Monday that he ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament, and while there were no other complications he will require surgery and faces up to nine months on the sidelines.

The injury is a cruel blow to Westren, who moved to the capital to join the Scots last December having failed to establish himself in the Pirates side.
He made 15 appearances last season, scoring four tries and played a pivotal role in a play-off campaign which saw his new club comfortably avoid relegation and clinch a second season in the Championship.
Westren initially made his debut for the Cornish Pirates in August 2005 but left after making just two appearances from the bench to join Launceston.
He scored 189 points for the Polson Bridge outfit during their 2010-11 National One season, including a club record 25 tries, and was snapped up again by his home town club. But with opportunities limited to break into the first team he soon found himself back on loan at Launceston after only three further games for the Pirates.
Westren now faces an anxious wait before bidding to make his mark in the Championship again.
