The widow of the late Poet Laureate Ted Hughes has revealed that she is planning to write her own memoir of marriage to the controversial figure.

Carol Hughes, speaking exclusively to the Western Morning News, said she hoped to set down her memories of life with the poet in North Tawton, Devon, "while I have full recall, and no false memory".

"I had a wonderful 28 years with Ted and I hope to record them for posterity," said Mrs Hughes, now in her early 60s, who was a young nurse when she married the poet in 1970, after the suicides of his first wife the American poet Sylvia Plath, and the woman he left her for, Assia Wevill.

Mrs Hughes, speaking to the WMN in support of a new memoir by Hughes' brother Gerald, said she applauded him for not making a judgment on the two tragedies, as many biographers have done.

"The people who write about Ted were not flies on the wall, even if they write as though they were," she says. "Nobody really knows what goes on between two people."

Her late husband had had a "a very happy and full life" despite the tragedy that dogged his life, she said.
