Womens Institute and gallery in St Agnes hit by an eldery driver is finally reopening
THE Women's Institute headquarters and gallery in St Agnes closed after an elderly motorist smashed through the building causing extensive damage is finally re-opening.The damage forced out the WI who use the first floor for its monthly meeting and an artist and silversmith who lost £12,000 in stock.
In October a local resident in his eighties reversed his Honda Civic, pinning his elderly wife against the Churchtown Arts building. He then drove the automatic car into The Little Feathers Gallery, smashing its window, damaging walls, stock and internal fittings.
Silversmith, Maria Mayle, who is celebrating her 10th year at the shop along with her partner, artist Gary Hall, said the accident ruined their autumn and winter trade.She said: "The shop closing hit us really hard. We lost about 90 per cent of our December and October half term trade. The smash twisted the bottom of the building, smashing the glass frontage and door."
The accident, after which the driver was said to have voluntarily given up his driving licence, caused £12,000 damage to the shop, a cost which Miss Mayle said was covered by insurance through the WI which own the building.

The walls and window have been rebuilt, new flooring has been laid and bespoke cabinets have also been made in time for the store opening in the second week of February.
