Work on a new health and wellbeing centre is due to start on the Isles of Scilly in the new year.

The £600,000 project at Carn Gwaval will offer a range of new facilities including a new centre for lifelong learning for the local population, a permanent new base for the memory cafe, a sensory garden and special provision for childcare.

Richard McCarthy, chairman of community services at Isles of Scilly Council, said: "The project will spread its benefits right across our local community.

"It will be a bonus too if we can throw open the doors on a job well done before the start of the summer season." The project, which will allow a variety of community schemes to operate on one site, is funded largely by grants from the Big Lottery Fund and the Isles of Scilly Local Action Group.
