World-beating Westcountry cheese-makers claim gold, silver and bronze global awards
Westcountry cheese-makers have scooped an armful of global awards, including gold, silver and bronze.
Quickes Traditional, of Newton St Cyres, near Exeter, took gold for its vintage Cheddar, silver for its oak-smoked Cheddar, and bronze in the extra mature category.
The company's awards were one of many announced this week following the World Cheese Awards the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham.
The Quicke family have been at Home Farm for more than 450 years; Sir John Quicke and his wife Prue built the dairy and daughter Mary continues to produce the cheese.
Tom Chatfield, sales and marketing manager at Quickes, said: "We are delighted that three of our cheeses were recognised at the awards. The standard of competition was extremely high, so we are thrilled."
The World Cheese Awards is the largest cheese competition in the world, with more than 2,700 entries from 30 countries around the globe.
More than 250 industry experts including producers, retailers, graders, writers, chefs and buyers were asked to nominate 58 super gold cheeses which were then re-judged, with 16 taken forward for a panel to vote for the champion cheese.
Wyke Farms, from Somerset, the UK's largest independent cheese producer and milk processor, won gold for its extra mature farmhouse Cheddar.
The award brings to 141 the accolades that Wyke Farms has won this year, beating last year's total.
The firm also took home silvers in the extra mature and smoked Cheddar categories and bronze in the Leicester group.
Another winner was the Taw Valley Creamery, in North Tawton, which won silver for its medium block creamery Cheddar and two bronzes in the extra mature creamery Cheddar and double Gloucester.
Brian Kerr, site manager, said: "Our cheese-makers always go the extra mile to ensure that our products are of an exceptional quality and these honours demonstrate that our cheeses really are worthy of global recognition."
