A GROUP of children paid a poignant tribute on Mothering Sunday to their mother who died last August, only days after they returned from their first family holiday abroad.

Jean Trewin and her husband Shane had returned from Spain when Jean was taken ill with septicaemia.

She died within two days of being admitted to hospital.

But on Sunday her four children went to St John's Church, Delabole, to pay tribute to their mum.

The children, Rebecca, 10, Stephanie, 12, Joshua, six, and Jessica, two, live with their father in Delabole.

Their aunt, Donna Copping, said: "The children have been coping remarkably well and Shane is a wonderful dad.

"He is a retained firefighter, and he is hoping to get back to work at the slate quarry by the end of this month, but he will still take the children to school and pick them up each day."

She said: "We had all gone on holiday to Spain together last August. It was the first foreign family holiday for Jean, Shane and the children, and I went with my two children and Shane's and my mum came too. We are a very close family and all enjoyed the holiday although Jean was feeling a little under the weather. But we put it down to all the stress of losing close family members over recent months.

"We came back on the Saturday and Jean was admitted to Treliske on the Sunday evening. She died on the Tuesday. Now we all wish we had never had the holiday. It has been so sad but the children are great kids.

"I have become a surrogate mother to the children and Steph gave me flowers on Mother's Day."
