Disadvantaged children from across Devon and Cornwall who benefit from free surf therapy courses have paid for their own, thanks to the Big Lottery Fund.

The Wave Project, which provides free, six-week surfing courses for youngsters with mental health difficulties, emotional problems or learning disabilities, will be able to run 300 extra courses over the next three years, thanks to the £177,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities programme.

The focus of the courses, which will be held at the charity's bases in Newquay, Gwithian, Polzeath and Croyde, is building confidence and self esteem, developing social skills and improving core life skills, such as teamwork and communication.

Project coordinator Joe Taylor said: "We're absolutely delighted to get this funding. It will enable us to build on the success of our surf therapy programme and will allow more local schools and projects working with disadvantaged young people to refer clients to us free of charge."
