Youth group in hard rock for Haiti move
A SALTASH youth music charity is hoping to get in the top 40 chart with its own Haiti fund-raising single.
About 50 youngsters at Livewire have joined forces to record a rock cover of Girlschool's 1980s hit single Emergency, which will raise money to rebuild a school in Haiti.
Budding musicians, aged between 10 and 20, came up with the idea to help support those suffering the aftermath of the earthquake which struck over a month ago. Livewire has been working in collaboration with the heavy metal band, Girlschool, to release the song.
A huge campaign is running to get the single in the charts with the full support of Girlschool as well as Black Sabbath's producer Mike Exeter and others giving it the final tweak before it hits the shelves. Ex-Rainbow singer Graham Bonnet will also be adding some vocals. The single, which is due to be released in the next two months, will be available for download on iTunes and limited edition CDs financed by Spinnaker International and Disc Manufacturing Services Ltd. Andy Rance, project coordinator said: "While we wish Simon Cowell and his record all the best we wanted to offer a rock/metal alternative for those people who like it raw and loud. This is an awesome opportunity for some 50 young musicians from Livewire to work alongside fantastic people and do something life-changing." A competition has been running to design the artwork for the single and a group has also been set up on Facebook to get the single to number one in the charts. Money will go to Haiti appeal charities and the target is to rebuild a school or launch a project to benefit youngsters. Mr Rance added: "We are not a rich charity, all we can offer is rock music, but that's something we are very good at. If we can raise enough money to rebuild or build a school and support some charities we will be really happy."
