TODAY is the last chance to cast your vote on a proposed out of town shopping centre near St Austell.
The £110 million development planned for Coyte Farm has polarised the St Austell community.

Developers say their plans will provide 1,000 jobs and revitalise the town. The plans include a 68,000 sq ft supermarket, 160,000sq ft shopping park with large units for up to ten national retailers, a care home, 12-acre youth academy extension to St Austell Golf Club, a pub and land for improvements to St Mewan's school and church.
However, campaigners fear that it could destroy town centre trade, with independent research by industry consultants Deloitte showing turnover for businesses in St Austell could drop by 23 per cent.

Coyte Farm's shopping area would be bigger than that of all St Austell's shops put together and it would become the third largest retail centre in Cornwall.
It could take trade away from not only St Austell, but Bodmin, Newquay, Wadebridge, Truro and Liskeard, the report shows.

“this devlopement should be given the green light and be granted planning permission. st, austell really do,es not want to go down the same old road as it did in the past when these major companies were stopped from coming there which left it behind the likes of forward looking truro and other places and ended up in the decline we have seen over the last few decades and earned it its name of st, awful. it must look ahead the past is history. i say get it built asap.”

I object to the Coyte Farm proposal because it is yet more evidence of speculator's greed to wreck the unspoilt agricultural land area around Tregongeeves.
Tregongeeves has an historical significance of which the people of Cornwall should be justly proud.
From memory I can recall the valley flooding and over spilling onto the Truro Road. The developer's (Metric Property Investments PLC) flippant remarks relating to the swale water management system is in my view totally unprofessional, as is the language used in the Proposal Description Document (to say nothing of their laughable publicity video).
The people of St Austell should be ashamed that permission was previously given to allow the desecration of the Quaker Cemetery which was given by the Edgecumbe Estate to the occupiers of the Tregongeeves Manor during the life time of Loveday Hambly and other persecuted inhabitants of Cornwall.
I would like to know by what right Cornwall Council or its later day equivalent has to build on the cemetery land in the first place and showed utter disrespect to crushing of the gravestones which were over three hundred years old.”

“I have already voted against on the basis that it will remove any viability St Austell town centre still has. Developments like this in other parts of the country have led to the death of the nearby town centres and the same will happen here.”
