Battles in the bay

Monday, July 28, 2008, 13:48

CROWDS cheered on competitors of Newquay Rowing Club as two major competitions took place this week.

Wednesday evening saw the ladies' crews take part in the Eglinton Rose Bowl.

The trophy was named in recognition of Ron and Beryl Eglinton, who played a major role in raising funds for the club house and facilities.

Ron was also a leading rower in his day.

The race itself saw three gigs take part but after a close battle The Fly crew came out on top.

On Thursday it was the turn of the men's crews as they took part in the FC West Trophy.

The trophy was named in memory of Fred West, a prominent local builder whose firm built such landmarks as the Great Western Hotel and The Pentire Hotel.

The trophy was first raced for back in 1934, when Newquay's working sailing vessels competed up to the start of the Second World War.

The last race was won by the Annie in 1939.

But after the war ended, the trophy was used by the rowing club members, starting in 1951 and has been raced for ever since.

Thursday's race saw three gigs take to the water – Treffry, Newquay and Dove.

Facing into a stiff south easterly breeze, the gigs raced two laps of the two mile course.

In a close battle Treffry had the advantage at the halfway point.

But as Dove looked to be closing, a friendly nudge helped Treffry on their way. Treffry finished eight second ahead of Dove, with Newquay in third place. The Newquay crew suffered from a broken foot rest, which severely hindered their chances.

David Cawardine, Fred West's grandson, and his wife Pauline, came down from Bath to present the winning trophy to the crew of Treffry.

They were: Marcus Bawden, Dave Yelland, Ross King, Danny Beckerleg, Aggsie Baird and Phil Morris. Cox was Derek Applewhite.

Looking ahead, men's crews will race for the Atkinson Trophy on August 3, from the Gannel to the harbour.
