Camborne band take honours for 34th time

Tuesday, June 23, 2009, 13:27

STREETS were closed on Saturday in Bugle for the 85th annual contest of the West of England Bandsman's Festival.

Cornish bands and individuals swept the board in the awards, winning all the trophies.

There was no surprise that the most successful three bands in the history of the competition, Camborne, St Dennis, and St Austell, all featured in the choosing of the championship section winners.

In the end, it was Camborne who won the section, highlighting them as the most successful band in the history of the competition – making this year's triumph the 34th time they have won the section since 1912.

President of Camborne Band, David Roberts, said: "It was a great day for both our senior and junior sections. The band performed very well and showed the dedication and keenness to win like they always do.

"Hopefully the juniors will be able to build on the success they enjoyed on the weekend and will soon be following in the footsteps of the seniors."

Mark Arnold, from the festival, said: "The contest had 14 bands in this year's festival – a slight decline on last year's numbers but the weather was much better than last year's rainy event.

"Nearly 600 people were at the event and the feedback was very good. It was a fantastic day and the weather couldn't have been better."
