End of an era: Carnival success but new organisers needed for next year

Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 16:46

ST TEATH Carnival saw the end of an era this year – as it was the last one to be organised by the football club.

Paul Burden chairman of St Teath Football Club thanked all those who had supported the event over the years but stressed the carnival would not be the last for the village.

He explained that only about five people were involved in the running of this years event and that it was time to let go of the running of it.

"We have done it for the past 13 years. We are sorry really to have to do it, but we also try to run the football club," said Mr Burden, whose wife has also acted as carnival secretary.

"The reason we took it on in the beginning was because we did not want to see it die because once it goes you do not get it back again. So we will help the new organisers all we can," he added. He also wished to thank all those who had supported the event and the collectors.

It cost about £700 to stage the carnival, and this year organisers said fund-raising was difficult and felt the event may only just break even.

However, the weather was on the side of the organisers and crowds lined the streets to watch the entries – which were down in floats on previous years although there was an increase in walking entries.

Camelford Band led the procession which included St Teath carnival queen Samaria Simmons and fairy queen Abigail Hudson and her attendant Chandrika Simmons.
