Wednesday, July 01, 2009, 16:42

A SUPER starry smoothound of 25 lbs 7 ozs 7 drams has set a new Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers' record by the huge margin of almost 5 lbs.

It was caught by Graham Browning of Truro City SAC during a trip out of Newquay aboard Dave Trebilcock's Che Sara Sara. Previous best was 20 lbs 4 ozs set in 2000 by Looe SAA's Alan Le-page.

All the reefs on the Channel side of the peninsula are fishing well for pollack, best fish weighing upwards of 15 lbs.

Four maximums of 10 fish were made during the Temple Fishery Heat of the Fly Fishing Charity Challenge. The heaviest of 24 lbs 15 ozs by top fundraiser Richard Lister of Penryn and Mike Parkin of Indian Queens.

Pushing very close with 24 lbs 10 ozs were John Twine of Liskeard and Steve Newman of Plaistow.

Bodmin's Graham Angel was aided and abetted by Broadwood Widger's Wes Ower to take third place with 24 lbs 9 ozs. Padstow's Steve Edensor and Paul Lewis had six rainbows for 15 lbs 9 ozs and claimed fifth place.

The heaviest individual bag of five for 13 lbs 8 ozs was by Parkin and Richard Lister attracted sponsorship of £821 adding to the magnificent total he has already contributed to the charity started in 1992.

The overall figure raised is now £167,568 and the competition is well on target to match and possibly exceed the £11,000 raised last year. The named teams now go through to one of the semi-finals in September. The next heat is at Hayle's Tree Meadow this Sunday, July 5. You can still enter by contacting Sue Gould 01392 873543.

● James Moore and Dan Hoskin, both of Bodmin, had their first experience of Town Parks Coarse Fishery on the outskirts of Paignton and found it very rewarding.

During a 24-hour session the pair accounted for nine carp to 19 lbs 4 ozs all going for kipper and garlic boilies. Christopher Way young son of Clive, who runs the Tackle & Bait shop in Plymouth, had a good day's sport taking carp of 13 lbs 10 ozs and 11 lbs 7 ozs and a catfish of 11 lbs 8 ozs.

● First round results of the Cornish Federation Knockout League have Carnhell Green A, Raleigh A, and Raleigh B in the winning positions.

Brian Collick, chairman of the CFSA adjudicating committee, administered the draw for the second round that has to be concluded before August 2: Probus B v Camborne AA; Probus A v Carnhell Green B; Raleigh B v Liskeard & District; Raleigh A v Carnhell Green A.

● The Angling Trust has launched a campaign to force the relevant authorities to appeal against the judgement passed by Judge Wassal at Exeter Crown Court of a two year conditional discharge instead of a fine to Newlyn-based Stevenson & Sons.

The press release says Trust members and sea anglers in general can sign up and support its campaign by going on line to newscast@anglingtrust.net
