Suspected heroin seized by police as pair are arrested

Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 15:28

DANGEROUS drugs have been taken off the streets of Newquay after police seized a substance believed to be heroin during a search of a Pentire home.

A quantity of drugs were taken from the house in Bezant Place after officers executed a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The substance will be tested, but police believe it is heroin. A 47-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were both arrested on suspicion of supplying heroin following the raid.

They have both been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Insp Dave Meredith, of Newquay Police, said the seizure of the drugs was a major victory for public safety in the town.

"This in an excellent result in our drive towards tackling the supply of heroin in Newquay," he commented.

"In light of a recent tragic suspected drugs death in Newquay and the fact that several heroin users in Newquay have recently overdosed and only been saved by prompt medical attention, this must be viewed as a positive step towards protecting public safety."

Heroin is a highly addictive Class A drug, and is often mixed with substances – including poisons such as strychnine – when it is sold on the streets.

Because of this, users often have no idea of how strong the drug they are taking will be and are at risk of overdose or death.

Long-term use can cause serious health conditions, including collapsed veins, arthritis and bacterial or viral infections.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Any person involved in the supply of heroin in Newquay should be aware that they will be subject to ruthless police attention and should expect a custodial sentence upon conviction of supplying Class A drugs."
