Website brings worldwide attention to Dr Who designs

Monday, December 01, 2008, 12:00

A WORLDWIDE demand for Dr Who replica characters and stage props has been generated thanks to a team of local design consultants.

Lanhydrock-based Creative Direction Ltd have just designed and launched a website for Millennium FX, the company behind all of Dr Who's weird and wonderful alien characters and set props.

The BBC sanctioned the company to sell full-size replica monsters and other items from the iconic science fiction drama, and MFX commissioned Creative Direction to design its website and spread the word around the world.

The Lanhydrock company handled all the branding, web design and product photography.

The design consultants last week also launched a sister website for Millennium FX, offering Cybermen, Ood and Syclrax for hire, with actors attending functions dressed in the appropriate costumes.

The design company has been based at Lanhydrock for the past seven years, and its portfolio includes commissions from High Street banks and stores and Cornish firms like Roddas Creamery and Kelly's ice cream.

Creative director David Major explained how his company became part of the weird world of Dr Who.

"One of the people involved with MFX attended Falmouth College of Art, so had an affinity with Cornwall. He was searching various design sites in London and also took a look at Cornwall, and came across our site, liked what we had done and commissioned us to design the new website," said David.

All the replica characters and props are made from the original moulds, pattens and materials. and there has already been a huge demand from Dr Who fanatics.

"The response has been phenomenal," added David. "On the first day the site was launched, orders were being placed from as far away as Australia.

"The same company does all the prosthetics and make up for Little Britain and the Catherine Tate Show, and we are delighted to become involved," he said.
