Top concert event for many years being held at Polkyth

Monday, June 29, 2009, 16:12

POLKYTH Leisure Centre in St Austell will be transformed into the biggest theatre in the area on July 12 for the spectacular 30th anniversary evening of Restormel Concert Band.

An exhilarating evening of music and dance is being planned for an audience of 600 – the largest St Austell has seen since the Coliseum closed and was subsequently demolished in 2004.

The event has been made possible with support from the Lottery's Awards for All Scheme.

At the event, Restormel Concert Band will be joined by some of the best choirs and ensembles in Cornwall, with special guests including the three Imerys Choirs, the White River Gospel Choir, St Mewan Primary School Choir and Hevva Cornish Dancers and Musicians.

The evening, introduced by BBC Radio Cornwall's James Churchfield, aims to provide something to suit everyone's tastes with pop, jazz, gospel and classical music and entertainment.

Founded in 1979 by local music teacher John Ferguson, the community-based wind ensemble has gone from strength to strength, providing an opportunity for musicians of all ages and backgrounds to come together under the leadership of enthusiastic and talented musical directors, and performing the length and breadth of the UK.

Mr Ferguson will be returning to St Austell from his new home in Australia, where he is head of music at the prestigious Scotch College, to join previous musical director, Malcolm Burley and current musical director, David Hendry, in conducting at the anniversary concert.

The band has a history of celebrating in style. This time, it has commissioned a new piece of music from the internationally-renowned conductor, composer, musical educator and director, Colin Touchin.

The stirring piece, entitled, The Ros-Tor-Mol Festival, and designed to celebrate the life and landscape of Restormel, will encompass a mass of emotions by band members, who last year gave words, poems, recollections and memories to encapsulate the composition.

Mr Touchin is working closely with the artists for a first-class performance of the new piece.

The premiere of this new choral piece accompanied by the 45-strong concert band will be the climax of the evening's festivities.

David Hendry, musical director of Restormel Concert Band, said: "This is a very special occasion for us.

"We are extremely excited about the concert, working with our guests and in particular, performing Mr Touchin's new masterpiece.

"All our band members are extremely passionate about music and are dedicated to making the band the best it can be.

"We are very grateful for the support from the Lottery, which has enabled us to plan and prepare for a really fantastic event, which will be enjoyed by hundreds and remembered for years to come."

Tickets cost from £10.50 and are available from Cornwall Riviera Box Office on 01726 879500 or 0845 094 0428, or visit www.crbo.co.uk
