An epic journey to go Christmas shopping

Tuesday, September 30, 2008, 16:15

A COUPLE from Australia will be travelling halfway around the world to buy their Christmas presents from Fowey this year.

As long as they can fit it all in their suitcase, Robyn Heath and his partner will be travelling more than 10,000 miles to the town to buy presents for their family and friends as well as treats to nibble on Christmas Day.

On a previous visit to the town in 2005 the couple heard about how wonderful the town's first Christmas market had been from traders when they arrived two days after it had taken place.

This year they have booked into a hotel for a week to ensure they do not miss the produce and crafts on offer.

Mr Heath e-mailed the market organiser Alan Dibb in August.

He said: "I just thought I'd let you know we are coming all the way from Australia to the Fowey Christmas Market, to do some shopping.

"We came in 2005 and missed the market by a couple of days and I was very disappointed.

"This time we have made sure we will be there for the market, we arrive on Friday, December 5 for one week.

"I am planning to do all my Christmas shopping at Fowey, as long as it can all fit in my case."

Mr Dibb felt honoured when he received the e-mail but was astounded someone was willing to travel so far.

He said: "It really is a feather in our cap. I think people will use any excuse to come back to Fowey.

"It is such a nice place to do your Christmas shopping with more than 80 traders offering all the best of local food, drink and crafts.

"I think that local town Christmas shopping is the way forward; buying something from a man or woman who made it with a bit of feeling.

"People always search for gifts which are a bit different, but I've never heard of anyone travelling so far to buy them."

The market is running on Saturday, December 6 and Sunday 7.
