Gym and trampoline centre for excellence ready to open

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 16:33

A GYM and trampolining centre for excellence in South East Cornwall will officially open tomorrow.

The former play barns at the site of Dobwalls Adventure Park have been transformed into a multi-use facility which aims to develop Cornwall's gymnastic and trampolining talent to regional and national standards.

Facilities including a full size sprung floor, asymmetric bars, parallel bars, beams, a vaulting table, mini gym and pre-school equipment will all be available, as well as two half-sized trampolines, full-sized competition trampolines and a matted training area.

The specialist centre is East Cornwall's first and it is hoped it will become a centre of excellence for the whole of the South West.

Mo Gregory has funded the project privately and has received many enquiries from groups wanting to use the centre.

She said: "The Dobwalls barns are the perfect location, size and space to create a venue like this which is not just about nurturing and developing gymnastic and trampolining talent across the region, but which will also attract people of all ages and abilities who just want to get and stay active by taking part in all of the sports on offer.

"Cornwall is painfully short of dedicated centres such as this, providing these sporting activities at grass roots level, with qualified coaches.

"We hope to attract some of the UK's top coaches to county as a result, not only for training purposes but to also deliver coaching courses and residential activities, offering our talented youngsters the opportunity to reach their potential." There are also plans to incorporate a wider range of sports into the venue over the coming months.

These will include indoor wall scrambling, tumbling, five-a-side football, badminton, aerobics, yoga, sports acrobatics, and agility classes.

The extra sections of the centre are still being developed and will be opened in the near future.

Malcolm Southern, whose family have owned and run Dobwalls Adventure Park for over 30 years said: "Mo and her team are extremely passionate and driven by the project.

"We think a centre of this type here would be fantastic for the community in South East Cornwall who will be able to use the facility, and for the youngsters across Cornwall, who will now have a dedicated centre of excellence."
