PEOPLE interested in standing in next year's local council elections can find out more about the job at a series of open events in Penzance.

Organised by town councillor Fiona Thomas-Lambourn, the evenings are aimed at letting would-be local politicians know all about council life.

The first is due to be held at Waves Café Bar, Causewayhead, next Tuesday from 5.30pm to 7pm.

Serving town councillors will be on hand to answer any questions and give an insight into political life in Penzance.

"There will be a huge amount of interest in the local elections next year," said Mrs Thomas-Lambourn.

"There hasn't been an election for parish councillors here for seven years, so this is a chance for interested people to come and have a chat with the council and ask questions."

The open event is also being seen as timely following the resignation of former councillor Margaret Freeman.

Because there was no call for an election, a new member will now be co-opted. Names of all those who have put themselves forward for the role will be handed to the town council to decide who will fill it.
