SEVEN Cornish firefighters are in training to tackle the New York Marathon.

Each of the competitors has pledged to raise at least £2,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity, which supports sick and injured, serving or retired firefighters and their dependants.

The runners will be holding auction nights, curry evenings, runathons and public donations to raise the money.

Three Redruth-based companies – Richfords Fire and Flood, Rodda's Creamery and the Garden Care Project – have also sponsored the firefighters, pledging £400 and providing training T-shirts.

Richfords' managing director, Steven Richford, said: "At Richfords Fire and Flood we regularly see first hand the great work that the Fire and Rescue Service does for our community.

"Therefore, when we heard Rob and the team were running the marathon to raise, vitally needed funds for the Fire Fighters Charity, we were only too pleased to help.

"We wish the team the best of luck with the event."

Jo Jobson, from The Garden Care Project, said: "When I heard that the group was taking part in the marathon for such a worthy cause, I was more than happy to get involved and sponsor the group and I would like to wish them all the best for November."

Firefighter Rob Hosking said: "We cannot thank these local companies enough for their support, especially during some tough financial times.

"We would also like to thank all of the businesses that donated items for our auction nights, as well as the public for their donations and words of encouragement during the runathons and training runs.

"We have all benefited or know somebody who has benefited from the services that the Fire Fighters Charity has to offer and we never know when these services may be called upon again.

"We are glad that we can support this wonderful charity, through our participation in the marathon and we hope to do the fire service and the charity proud come November 4."
