Nine days in December as wet as first three months of 2012 in Penzance
As much rain fell in west Cornwall in the nine days leading up to Boxing Day as the first three months of 2012.
The period from December 18 to 26 saw 145.4mm of rain fall in the Penzance area, with the highest rainfall between December 21 and 22 measuring 44.2mm.
The statistics, gathered by Penzance weatherman Graham Easterling, show the disparity in weather over the course of the year which saw the South West drift from drought to flood-like conditions.
Despite an exceptionally dry start to 2012, with January to March experiencing just 44% of normal rainfall levels, the year ended up being the third wettest in Penzance since 1991.

After a cool, very wet and dull summer, 1096.2mm of rain fell between June and December, one-and-a-half times the 737mm average for the period.
December itself started off relatively dry, however a strong, raw South East wind on December 12 heralded the approach of active Atlantic fronts, a succession of which pushed across Cornwall for the rest of the month giving large amounts of rain.
