Those dirty nails and good gardening deeds
Jane Gould has asked me how to cultivate spinach but she is unsure when to sow.
Jane's late husband did all the growing, she tells me. My advice to her is my advice to you – get to a garden centre and look at the veggie seeds (or go online). If anything takes your fancy, pick it off the shelf and read the information on the back. The essentials of what you need to know are there; when, where, depth, distance and so on. Take heed of these helpful words.
There's no rush though. If you want to grow your own outside wait until the soil feels warm to the touch. Old-Timers used to sit (sometimes barebottomed!) on their plots and if they felt comfortable, they figured their seeds would be all right too. You might prefer to rest an elbow on your patch of weed-free ground and make a judgment call like that. Either way, no rush. Aside from broad beans which are big and chunky, I'll not be sowing direct outdoors until around March.
