"Because that part of South America was colonised by the Spanish, perhaps?"
So before they start or anyone else starts lecturing anyone on handing stuff back, wouldn't it be good if they first got there own house in order? By handing back what they took from the indigenous people of South America and they'd setting a real example! And ever since 1982 the it is the same stunt every year from these people with no respect to the islanders at all!
Alistairtruro who do you support?
"The Islanders have the RIGHT to Self-determination and they want to remain as a British Overseas Territory".”

“...and part of the Argentine argument is that they acquired the Falklands from Spain on their independence in 1811. Whatever the claims, what's paramount is the self determination to assert their independence from Argentina and their wish to be dependant on the UK to protect that.
Modern colonisations are much more discrete, invade a country, withdraw when the business interests are firmly installed as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and soon Iran and Syria which is how the US do it, the US aren't too strong when it comes to the interests of the ordinary man in the street.”

“Alastair. I don't know where this information came from, but it certainly needs to have some meat put on the bones.
1. The international figures mentioned were, the President's of Argentina, Venezuela, and Cuba - nothing unusual there.
2. In South America the UK is often referred to as England - particularly in Argentina (the reason for which will be come apparent in the next paragraph).
3. Penn suggests we are anachronistic. He clearly doesn't know about the various claims made by Argentina: which have regularly included the details of, a Papal Bull (The Inter caetera) issued on 4th May 1493 by Pope Alexander VI; which granted to Spain all lands to the West & South of a Pole to pole line and 100 leagues West and South of any of the islands of the Azores or the Cape Verde Islands.
4. We probably could not mount an invasion as we did in 1982. Without being complacent we would not be required to do so, as we have placed in position a considerable deterrent, and should the Argentine's, foolishly, consider invasion their losses would be extremely (unacceptably) high.
The deterrent includes:
At Sea:
HMS Dauntless, a type 45 'Daring' Class Destroyer, which is capable of defending London against air and missile attack, and is one, if not the most modern and capable ship of her kind, plus two Trafalgar Class Nuclear powered Hunter-Killer submarines.
On land:
About 1000 Troops (including an Infantry Regiment) supported by others fully equipped with Rapier Air to Ground missiles, and counter missile systems -all of which can be reinforced very quickly indeed.
In the Air:
Four of the latest Typhoon attack aircraft, equipped with ground to air, or air to air missiles.”

“The people of the Falklands have the democratic right to self determination, end of story.
As Penn's ignorant remarks, I'd have thought he'd enough on his plate campaigning against the injustices his country has committed”
