“Recently, I was in a well known eatery in Brussels, talking to people from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy (in their own tongue) and a young French girl of my acquaintance, who works in that Bastion of Democracy, the EU Commission, said, "For goodness sake speak your native tongue, then we can all be involved in the discussion". I readily obliged. She hit me!”

“But Taxman as a Cornishman wouldn't your native language be Cornish ? I trust that you put them straight and told them that English might well be the working langauge of the EC/EU and international business and one that everyone in the UK speaks but there are other languages to be celebrated and enjoyed as well. I was involved in the process of the establishment of Cornish as a recognised COE language. But the pushback at the time from the then UK government of the day to "keep the Cornish in their place" was quite flabbergasting and highlighted for me the institutional bias against all things Cornish in Whitehall and Westminster. Thankfully, the right result was finally delivered but it involved a degree of slick footwork to prevent a certain senior politician and his department from blocking the application. Brgds.”

“Because the Irish - Scots - Welch - Cornish and English all speak English, would the language be better know as British, perhaps Brussels can change this for us, they are hell bent on changing everything else.”
