The Mayor of Redruth has been in liaison with Kirsty and Linda at Redruth School who are designing and building a replica of the 'Lamb and Flag' the ancient symbol of Redruth which will be carried in the procession and then be placed in Boots Store, Redruth for a 'naming' competition open to all the youngsters of Redruth and with the winner receiving a small prize.

All Schools and pre Schools in the area have now been invited and many have confirmed their interest. A simple 'black and white' theme is invited from all pupils and this can be as simple as a St. Piran's Flag which pupils are invited to make thus reducing the burden on over committed teaching staff. A maximum of 50 pupil representatives plus accompanying teachers, staff and parents from each educational establishment has been suggested but others may join in the day. This is sure to be Cornwall's largest St. Piran procession!

A special request is made to schools from whom we have not heard to contact us. Some are involved in Piran Celebrations elsewhere we do know.

This is a growing community event and banners and representatives from all organisations are warmly welcomed. All religious denominations are invited as are Pagan followers. We have a considerable number of musicians now involved but more are welcomed. Please get in touch, one and all! Piran was a very inclusive and open Saint!

The next meeting to continue to work on arrangements leading up to Redruth's very own Saint Piran Festival is set for 6PM Wednesday 9th January, 2013 in the Redruth Town Council Chambers, Penryn Street, Redruth TR15 2SP. Free parking is available at the adjacent Saint Rumon's Club, Penryn Street, Redruth TR15 2SP.

“Wonderful news today. Two major magazines based in London have picked this celebration of Cornwall's National Saint up have mailed me and are looking to do features on it! All publicity will be handled by the CIC, Town Development Manager and Council. Much interest shown in the Cornish Language as well!”

“More good news about this coming celebration of our Patron Saint of Tinners and now accepted as the National Saint of Cornwall!

All our local schools are now involved along with members of Gorsedh Kernow and indeed, the Grand Bard herself, the Redruth Old Cornwall Society, town Councillors and Chamber of Commerce, three differing Churches, Anglican, Catholic and Methodist, pagan followers, muslims, several pre schools, four varying musical bands and other local groups. The interest has been phenomenal.

A magnificent and diverse community celebrating Piran our much loved and peaceful, inclusive National Saint.”

“Thank you very much Big_Ger. We now have four 'celebrations' a year in Redruth, one every three months. Nadelik (Christmas), St. Piran's Fest, Murdoch and Miners & Pasty Day.

Thus far they have all been incredibly successful and well supported and the traders report back through the Chamber of Commerce that footfall is increased on these days.

We have to make to most of what lays about us and it does serve both to sell the town and draw a community together as well as visitors. For example, on the last Miners & Pasty Day, we had a wonderful group of Mexicans all of Cornish Heirtage spend a few days with us. They also make pasties by the way, but with slightly different contents to our traditional ones.

We like to think of Redruth as a traditional Cornish town and yes, we are Cornish first and foremost. That said, on Miners' Day, I was proud to shake the hands of a black man who told me he was proud to be Cornish, as well as the Mexicans too. Our photographs and gifts are now in a town in Mexico.

We have a marvellous and very old heritage, it goes back thousands of years and we do our best to market it.

The one thing about Redruth is that we have people from all backgrounds working together and celebrating the true diversity of our Cornish town.”
