Wadebridge is getting ready for the Cornwall Folk Festival, its annual carnival of music and dance, over the August bank holiday weekend.
Sunday night sees Silvia Nicolatto, a singer from the Minas Gerais region in Brazil where around 3,000 Cornish mining families emigrated during the hard times up to 1950. She plays with notable local musicians including percussionist Pete Turner and Cornish bard Neil Davey to produce exciting merger of Celtic and Brazilian.
On Saturday the town welcomes three giants of folk guitar – John Renbourn, Clive Carroll and “musician’s musician” Wiz Jones, who is now the festival’s president.
Earlier that day, another Cornish bard Mike O'Connor with Barbara Griggs perform their masterpiece of language and melody “Return to Lyonesse”, a musical tale about the lost Celtic Lands of Lyonesse.
Starting at 4pm on Friday 23rd, there is a daily acoustic marquee session featuring bands from across Cornwall, as well as workshops, children’s events, many pub song sessions, some ceilidhs and street performers, and even a folk mass.
Now in its 41st year, the festival continues to turn the town centre into a celebration of Celtic, British and international acoustic music.
