Geevor Tin Mine is very pleased to announce that Pendeen Pilot Gig Club have had a new pilot gig built and it will be launched from Newlyn Harbour on Sunday 9th February from 12.00pm onwards. Members of the club voted for the new gig to be named ‘GEEVOR’.
Ladies Captain Debbie Sedgeman said “It is such a huge achievement for the new gig to be delivered, it follows years and years of fundraising from a group of very dedicated people. It is testament to how hard everyone has worked to get a new gig built for the club. We are all looking forward to rowing Geevor and hopes its arrival to Pendeen Pilot Gig Club will attract more people from the local community to come along and give gig rowing a try. All are welcome to see GEEVOR launched on its maiden voyage out into Mounts Bay (weather permitting!).
Geevor is thrilled that the club chose the name and it tops off the most successful year ever winning Silver in ‘Historic & Heritage Property & Country House Award, Gold in ‘Art, Museum & Maritime Attraction’ and Gold ‘Winner of Winners’ in the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2014. To have a pilot gig named after the mine is a great honour and Geevor is pleased that the gig will be rowed and raced for many years by members of the local community from the junior crews up to the super-vets(over 50’s!).
Geevor wishes Pendeen Pilot Gig Club the best of luck for the future and can’t wait to hear the shouts of ‘Come on Geevor!!!’ at the 25th World Pilot Gig Championships on St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly in May.
