A baker claims to have shattered the world record for the biggest Cornish pasty ever produced.

The 1,900 lb (850kg) monster was so big it had to be transported by lorry to a special weighbridge for verification.

The pasty – which would cost £7,000 – was hand-crafted yesterday as part of a cook-off for a TV food show. The winners, Bodmin's Proper Cornish, beat rivals Lostwithiel Bakery in the 24-hour race at Fowey regatta. Director Mark Muncey said the team of six was "tired but ecstatic".

The winning version of the iconic dish contained 364 lb (165kg) of beef skirt as well as vast quantities of potatoes, onions and swede.

A special oven had to be built to cook the pasty – a process which took 11 hours – and it was transported still inside for judging.

Equivalent to about 3,500 regular servings, it was later broken up and dished out to the hungry crowd.

The event was filmed for the food show Monster Munchies, due to be screened on the Good Food channel later this year.

“Having just read your article and as the co-owner of Lostwithiel Bakery I would like to clarify a couple of points. Firstly we were taking part in a challenge organised by RDF Media on behalf of The Good Food Channel to make the largest Cornish Pasty against a rival baker. We were not told who they were. Secondly, we were at no point advised that we were involved in an attempt at beating the world record for the largest pasty. Our bakery employees 3 part time, myself and my partner Christine making a grand total of five.I believe that your readers should be made aware of the vast difference in size between ourselves and Proper Cornish. To compare us to eachother as equal in size would be absurd.”
