THE driver of an Alfa Romeo that hit a lamppost and ended up in the middle of a roundabout at 4am staggered towards arriving police officers and told them: "I admit everything. I was driving. I am under the influence."

Christopher Orwell, 25, of Fore Street, Chacewater, pleaded guilty at Truro Magistrates' Court to drink driving in Southgate Street, Redruth, on October 6.

Alison May, for the CPS, said officers had gone to the roundabout having had reports of the car.

Orwell later tested at 65mcg, nearly twice the legal limit.

His solicitor Alex Blair said he had been out with his girlfriend, but they fell out. He got out of a taxi at Chacewater but decided to drive to see her.

Orwell, who works in the health industry, was banned from driving for 18 months and fined £225 with £107 costs and surcharge.
