AS PART of Art8, a drawing depicting the right hand of legendary physical actor and playwright Steven Berkoff is on display in a presentation of preparatory sketches and studies by the figurative painter Nicholas Charles Williams.

Berkoff, pictured, posed for a painting by Williams in 1995 when the study was made, with sittings in Brighton, London and the artist's studio in Newquay. The finished work was also used for the cover of Berkoff Plays, Volume One. The selection of sketches and studies document initial thoughts and ideas for paintings and reveal the process leading to finished works. The majority are taken from sketchbooks. Other studies include the first working sketches for Williams' secular triptych

Desideratum. The painting itself was exhibited widely with shows at the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro; St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh; St Mary le Bow Church, London and Liverpool Cathedral for the European Capital of Culture.

The informal Watershed space (above a surf shop) makes a fitting venue for the sketches, connecting Williams' work with his lifelong passion for surfing.
