European regatta victory for Rock team

Monday, November 10, 2008, 12:43

A CORNISH rowing team is celebrating this week after winning a gig race in Holland.

The women's A crew from Rock were delighted after finishing triumphant at a regatta in Muiden, 15 miles east of Amsterdam, in their brand new gig Swift.

Last year three Rock women joined forces with rowers from Dartmouth, Truro and Caradon and were just pipped into second place by 14 seconds after more than two hours of racing.

This year they were determined to move up one place and they managed it in style.

The regatta marks the end of the open-water rowing season in the Netherlands with a great variety of boats taking part.

This year that included seven gigs from Holland and four from the South West.

As well as a men's A crew, Rock also had three men joining forces with other clubs and two women rowing as part of another team. This typifies the camaraderie of the weekend.

Chrissie Muir from Rock Rowing Club said: "There are three gruelling five-mile races over the two days of competition and it is certainly not for the faint hearted. The event has a wonderful atmosphere with hard partying following the hard rowing.

"The winning crew included a mother and daughter. One of the men has just celebrated his 60th birthday but he rowed and partied just as hard as the others.

"One 15-year old girl from the club took part in the event for the first time and rowed in the pressurised stroke seat. One member achieved a personal milestone by completing all three races two years after breast cancer. Many different stories, one shared passion."
